Harvington C of E First and Nursery School

‘Together we love, learn and grow’

Sport

All children participate in two lessons of physical education each week. We follow a well structured PE plan for our curriculum learning. We are also fortunate to work closely with Sports Challenge and a professional sports coach teaches each year group each week. In Nursery and Reception  the children are taught how to warm up and cool down, how they can use all the space and listen to instructions and have lots of fun activities to make sure they are very active. In the other year groups the sports coach works closely with the PE lead and supports the school planning. The children love the variety of the activities.

Each half term we hold a sport enrichment day when all children take part in activities learning new skills. This year we have already enjoyed archery, boxercise, yoga and hockey. These are led by our Sports Challenge coach. Also the Key Stage Two Young Sports Leaders also lead activities with each class, providing an opportunity for other sporting activities to be practised as well as providing leadership opportunities for the older children.

In addition, the children all take part in a daily skipping session, again to encourage a daily physical activity. They are really developing their skipping skills!

Some children work with the PE lead to be trained as sport leaders. Their role is to lead sporting activities at lunchtime play. The sport ministers oversee this activity.

At playtime and lunchtime there are always a fabulous range of play equipment for the children to use to encourage them to be physically active. We have balls, skipping rooms, hula hoops and obstacle equipment.

We also play in teams and compete against other schools in football and netball.
